Why Muslims not Celebrate Valentine's Day?
Students Islamic Organisation (Mumbai Division) celebrated Valentine’s Day with a difference in college campuses and other places in Mumbai on February 14. In a statement, it said, “Valentine’s Day promotes unethical male-female relations. The celebration of Valentine’s Day is nothing but giving open licence to the youth to indulge in immoral acts. SIO opposes such behaviour strongly and believe that such activities erode moral and family values.
“SIO (Mumbai) aims to convey the message of universal brotherhood on this Valentine’s Day. SIO (Mumbai) wants every Indian to be a Valentine to the 30% Indians who live below poverty line, to the 2 million Children who die of hunger every year, to our farmers who are reeling under debt and to women who are burnt for dowry. Rather than making an individual happy, let us make everyone happy.”
“Market forces are promoting Valentine’s Day to reap benefits. We are against such western invasion of our society as it affects family bonds and undermines India’s culture. This as an occasion that should bring people closer to one another, and add spice to their lives. We are against blindly imitating the West,” said President of SIO Mumbai Shaikh Javed.
True love is selfless. It’s a state where individual desires disappear and one’s life becomes a vehicle for service to the other. There is no more wanting for ourselves, only for others for the sake of God. In these times of economic recession and slowdown one should care for the poor and needy. Instead of wasting money on our Girlfriend/Boyfriend let us bring a lifetime change in someone else’s life.
SIO-Mumbai has appealed to the masses to condemn practices that are capable of dissuading people from the true meanings of love and altruism to the extent that the celebration is reduced to a moral decline. It has invited people to be a part of reconstruction of society for a better India.
